Many manufacturers of disposable food packaging claim that their products are “environmentally friendly, ecological and sustainable”, but what exactly does environmentally friendly mean?

There are only two clear classifications for environmentally friendly disposable packaging products. One is biodegradable and the other is compostable.

Biodegradable products refer to products that are capable of being broken down into low molecular compounds by bacteria or other living organisms under natural environmental conditions that can indicate a period of time, thus realizing degradation by biological means.

Compostable product means that the product is capable of being broken down into humus for composting. Humus is an organic material that facilitates plant growth. Compostable products will allow nature to start the cycle again.
